How I fixed my group request limit

Tue Sep 20, 2016, 9:14 PM
At the end of August 2016, DeviantArt released a change to groups, limiting submissions in a group to 10 a day. This change also impacted the request limit for admins. And it was clear from the start that something was wrong. Some groups were able to request many artworks a day while others only 10 or even less. And there were also other issues: members submissions way higher than 10 a day, groups being hacked because their invites as admins were suddenly automatically approved, and maybe other issues that I don't know of. Since my own group was limited to a maximum of 10 requests a day, I decided, with the collaboration of the help desk, to investigate.

This article is an attempt to help groups with similar request issues as mine. I can't guarantee that what I've done with my group will work with yours. I cannot guarantee either that everyone of those steps are necessary. This is just what I've done and it fixed my problems somehow!

But if you are reading this because you wish to know how you can voice your opinion to DeviantArt about this change, I will write a bit about this at the end of this journal.

How requests are supposed to work

As a founder, or an admin, you should be able to request up to 10 deviations per folder per admin. It's all a matter of settings and knowing how this thing works.

It's not about the time, it's about the time span!

From the Help Desk: The day setting is for the full 24 hours span. It should reset at midnight on the UTC timezone.

If you request artworks at 9 PM, they will still count as your daily request amount the next day at 9 AM. If you reach the limit, you'll have to wait 24 hours before requesting again! Wondering why your request limit seems to change from one day to another? It's the time!

Stay away from the Featured folder!

The Featured folder can only be set on the Global Submission Limit. The Global Submission Limit is the total amount of deviations a person is allowed to submit/request in the group. If you set your all your Folder-specific limits to "Global settings", it means that the deviant will not be able to submit more than your Global Submission Limit IN TOTAL for all the group! Ring a bell yet? I will explain later how you can set your Folder-specific limit to avoid the Global Submission Limit.

If you request 10 artworks in any of you group's folder, it counts toward the Global Submission Limit, and since the Featured folder doesn't have a "Folder-specific limit", it means you won't able to request anything in the Featured folder. So if you use the Featured folder to request artworks, no wonder you're limited to 10 a day!

This is the message when you reach the Global Submission Limit:

Tip: Request to your Featured folder first!

How I fixed my group

Reset Group Permissions

Only the Founder must do this task, because any other admin will remove their own privileges to the group!

Your settings might look OK, it doesn't mean that they are! Sometimes, when DeviantArt releases a change to groups, the internal data (unseen to you) can be corrupted. If you don't mind resetting your group, do it! It might fix many issues!

In your Admin Area, on the Manage Members page, you will find on the right bottom side of the page, a "Reset Group Permissions" button that will allow you to start anew!

GroupRequests Reset by Stygma

Setting the Folder-specific limit

Go to your Admin Area, on the Manage Members page.

If either your Moderators and Contributors can request artworks, don't bother adjusting the settings for both of these roles, unless you want different settings for them. You can set the privileges of Any Administrator and all of them will be covered. But to be safe, I did change the Founder settings too (it might not be necessary if you set Any Administrator).

Select the Founder role. On the right panel, you will find under "On Gallery, Founder:" a link called "Show All Folders". Click it to be able to see the settings of all your folders.

For your Featured folder, choose a Global Submission Limit of 10 deviation per day. Remember: is you submit to any folder other that the Featured folder, it counts toward the limit of your Featured folder!

For each of your folders, set the Folder-specific limit to 10 deviation per day.

Repeat for Any Administrator or the admin role that can request artworks in your group. You can also do the same process for your group's Favorites.

In a while, you'll be able to request 10 deviation per folder per admin per 24 hours span (except for the Featured folder, unless you request to this one first!)

This is the message when you reach the Folder-specific limit:

Settings the members

For Members, Affiliates or Deviants, depending who can submit in your group, you'll have to fix the settings too (especially if you reset the group permissions). But it might be wise to set the Folder-specific limit to Global Settings for most of your folders, if you want to avoid SPAM. You can chose a different Global Submission Limit for your members than for your admins as well. Remember that if you chose to set the Folder-specific limit to something else than Global Settings, it means your members might be able to submit more than 10 deviations a day to your group since they will be able to submit to each of those folders. In short, if you set the Global Submission Limit to 10 a day and leave the Folder-specific limit of all your folders to Global Settings, your members will only be able to submit 10 deviations a day to your group IN TOTAL.

Be patient!

Remember that 24 hours span? It seems that changing the settings of your group won't reset that waiting time. If you already requested artworks in the last 24 hours, you will have to wait more to see any change!

What else can we do?

Do not send your opinion or suggestions to the Help Desk

The job of the Help Desk is to help people fix actual problems (like bugs). They don't take suggestions or opinions. It's useless to lash at them. They won't tell you any business secrets! They won't change anything for you and they can't! The people answering at the Help Desk are not the ones taking business decisions or coding the site! (But if anything you do can't fix your problems, then it's time to contact them!)

Use the Suggestion Forum and use it wisely

We don't have a place for opinions (or ranting), but we do have a place for suggestions! But... for a suggestion to be seen by the staff, it must gain votes! Therefore, it's useless to send 100 suggestions of the same subject! It's way better to give 100 votes to a suggestion!

Here are some suggestions on the topic you can vote on if you agree:

Global Settings on d/a!  ON most Groups (not all ) cannot 'request/submit MORE than 10 submissions a day!  This is supposed to be for each Folder! This is NOT happening..............my limit for requests on: JennyStokes-Fav's is 10 (some days) others a LOT more!
I KNOW from the comments I have been reading from Groups.....some ONLY get 10!
I also know that quite a few Founders have closed their Groups down.
I am seeing less and less 'art' on here which is what this Site is all about.
From comments and some Staff this is supposedly to STOP 'spam' which is crap! We all know how to stop spam?
This is mainly because d/a wishes to 'cut down' on it's servers...........I fear the end of d/a is upon us.
I have sent out the comments to all my 'watchers' and HOPE thay you all will take the time to do this also.............Go to: D/a Comments.....recent.
This is NOT a bug!
Thank you

Lurking  RE: Changes in Groups and "Add Media"
deviantART Groups  ALL groups now have a ten submission-per-day limit for galleries AND Favorites for Founders, Administrators and Members. Not per folder. Per DAY; a 24-hour period from the second a Deviation is submitted, and not a DA "day" that starts and ends at midnight PST or PDT, so no thinking ten items can be submitted at 11:30 PM PST then again at 12:01 AM PST!
Be advised that the ten-per-day limit is for Super Groups, as well as Non-Subscribed Groups!
That means for DevNews especially, it will be far more difficult to run the group since the gallery depends on being able t
Let's Talk About... The New Group Artwork LimitSo recently, the DA Staff changed something about groups.
They made groups have a 10 artwork limit each day.
I do not feel like that is right. Some people's lives depend on getting advertised in groups.
In sent in a ticket, and here is what I said:
'Dear DA staff,
Please consider changing the amount of allowed works for groups.
Your recent change of the max 10 a day is not enough. You have said you changed this to try and stop spam but I find that reason not good enough; people rely on groups to get commissions and make an income.
When people do not see their work they lose business.
You are hurting the community as a whole by having this limit, and I don't think it's right.
What if their only source of income comes from getting commissions, and they end up not having enough art displayed, and get none. What if they were going to lose their house or they needed money for food, but they couldn't get enough advertisement because there wasn't a good enough limit in the groups?

Hi There,
Thanks for your inquiry. I'm afraid this isn't a bug but rather an attempt to reduce group spam on site. Each member of a group is now only able to add up to 10 deviations to the group per day depending on your group's settings. Our data shows it was very rare for individual group admins to add more than that so the 100 and 1000 deviation options were not in use except to spread spam.
While we regret the inconvenience this may cause, our investigation shows that 10 deviations per member of a group per day is quite generous. This means you can add 10 per day, each of your admins could add 10 per day, and each of your members could add 10 per day. If you have your group settings maxed out to allow 10 deviations into a group per day for each class and you have 100 people in your group that is 1,000 devia

I'm going to be adding links to other journals on this issue as I find them in addition to sharing my experience and why I don't like the new feature concerning group submission limits. Please don't ignore this journal, this is important for all of us users. Thanks in advance to everyone who reads the whole journal.
By now you probably know that groups have a maximum submission limit of 10 deviations per day per folder. This isn't really news anymore.
I am an admin of 8 groups, in 7 of those, I'm the founder. I submit anything to my groups that fits their purpose, mostly only for the seven I created, as the other is quite large and have more active members. I have experienced problems adding deviations to my group gallery, primarily for OriginalComicsGalore. I should be able to add 10 deviations to each folder per day, as you can see here: I have double checked the setting for my group. It doesn't help or change anything. I c

does anyone know if there's a way to contact deivantart not over email? I'm tired of the generic answer they literally send out to everyone when it's the same issue. they won't change the limit, they won't handle people on here threatening and degrading people and it's seriously irritating. I'd rather talk to the help desk on the phone then over email. because then I can probably actually GET AN ACTUAL ANSWER

This is very helpful but then again I find this new feature dense, as well as their excuse, we did this just to prevent spam. Back in 2011 when robots use to operate on this site, engineers didn't care, their only excuse was, we cannot ban someone just because he either adding deviations to his favorites too fast or watching every deviant that he spots on. I noticed some accounts that have up to 1 million favorites in less than a year.

It's also expensive to have your own servers. You need a lot of space to stock all the images and journals. You need to do maintenance on those servers, fix them, upgrade them, pay all the specialized staff. It's nothing like your computer ay home. If you outsource your technology, you only have to concentrate on the content (site) and traffic. And you don't have to pay for a local either.

Hello ! Please sorry from worry.

I just wanted to tell that right now all miniatures (thumbs) of each folder in groups started to work normal , i glad that it was fixed.

Someone fixed problem from 14 days.

But they fixed it in some weird way... i will expain what i mean , early you could to move cursor on miniature (thumbs) of any folder in group and if you kept cursor just on this miniature and then some slowly moving cursor from left to right side.. so system like in mini slideshow showed you several thumbs of other artworks which are also located in the same folder... Now with fixing problem this function for sad disappeared... now almost all folders in groups become static , they showing only first picture... i said almost but first 10 folders saved that function.

Those mini slideshow could to show not more than 3-4 artworks (i mean it was not very ideal) but it was good option for Admins and also for just users to fast see first artworks in folder without opening it.

I want again notice that I first noticed this problem at 6 October 2016 and after 14 days at morning 12pm (Kyiv time) this problem was fixed. This showing that they are not completely forgot about problems which existe in groups , it is and no possibility to search by names in whole group , it is and no possibility to see all tags of folders where was copied this or this artwork in group same and in gallery of just user , it is also limit for folders not more than 5000 artworks for each folder and not more than 200 folders for one group. I do understand that 5000 artworks it is good number but i also want to notice what happend when folder became full (when it gets more than 5000 artworks... then system deleting last artworks from last pages that add new artworks to folder... and system not telling you which artworks were deleted... it will tell you about their names only if they were only in this folder (i mean they were not copied also to some other folder...) then system will tell Admin that near 10-24 artworks were deleted from group...

Also i want to remind other that do not forget that in faves also existe limit , not more than 50 000 artworks for one folder (collection) then system will start to eraze last faved artworks , when you see in faves number 2080-83 (number of pages) you should to come to last pages and move or copy artworks to another one (saving) folder.

Thats all what i wanted to say also Traditional Positive way in drawing Forever.

I guess why they made those limitation depend with submission and why it touched everyone and founder too. Probably they shoulded to do so cause they have more old servers than new and if keep to wake up traffic it can kill servers , i saw how before site worked , if in your own gallery system showed all miniatures of yours artworks so in groups system worked not fine , system showed or almost all thumbs (miniatures) of artworks or it showed 4 thumbs from 24.. other just not loaded... i guess that they have some real problems with their servers where Deviant Art hosting storage and everything what need for normal loading site in while. Its just mine thinking , such not very good loads i started to notice near two weeks ago and yesterday appeared this real problem , miniatures not just not loading... system like showing that here no picture for showing as first picture...

First 15 folders work normal and all other not work for showing first picture as thumbs of folder... Right now in every group existe such problem first 15 folders from beginning work and other not work.

I heard something about that they changed servers or made some really good for them technology update , i remind that they even selebrated it hmm. It was near year ago , i remember how they showed messages like ''...during day you will not have possibility to post new artworks but you will still to browse DA and make faves...'' so i thought that now after that update which finished successful.. everything will work fine or better than early..

I dont know how work Amazon servers and i first time hear that Amazon give their own servers for use as hosting for other sites esspecially for such big sites as Deviant Art even DA contain just pictures and very little flash videos but anyway...

This is sad story that they shoulded to sell their servers and how long those servers worked until they stopped and sell them ? Probably if someone bought them , they were still in good condition hmm.

Deviant Art some time ago changed their system which touched paying also they added banner which ask people to disable all ads-blocking extensions... (they wrote almost about every popular blocking ads extensions... i even noticed one new for me...) So i thought this will help them to get more money from showing Ads but i dont know how it helping them in real hmm. Probably senior members know something about it ?

I'm going to request it to my group Unframed-Nature if that's okay...
I know a couple of admins who like to request work, were having trouble and brought this whole thing to my attention- luckily I'd already seen articles regarding the issue and linked it to them in the convo. of the back area...

... however, I am still not really sure if this affects us,
or how it affects us. I cannot tell that it affect me personally at all!

But I never request work to the FEATURED folder at all.. I do request work, (and so do a few others, to different folders), and later work gets MOVED to the Featured folder.

Now these other couple of Admins. Have received that message there... in RED.

I haven't, but I am not sure why. :XD:

I do not know if everything is okay in our group or not?

I do not know if I should RESET GROUP PERMISSIONS
since we have millions of folders! Cause we are such an older group.

I'm afraid it can open all the many folders. ???

Or, maybe it will just affect me to work on the folders that we currently, use.

I've always been afraid of that particular button, especially since I took over the group, and it wasn't mine start with.

I am afraid to work on it from scratch, from the very beginning! I might not have the time or understanding! :scared:

But mostly this does make sense, it just makes me worry if we need to worry about it for our group or not, since I am not fully understanding. ??

However, thank goodness you wrote SOMETHING about this!!! :faint:

I don't really know why the system had to be messed up to begin with.

I wish... that this could get a DD. ;)

The reason I'm reading through it again, is because we open folders, and close them and create NEW ones every other month, and
also, I totally forgot about all of this... so I am glad to have to refer to. I will have to recheck what I have done, and maybe even re-do it.

Yes, my mind literally blanked out on this whole issue. It it WHY I actually "requested" it to FEATURED. (which is ironic, after what I first said)
so that I would always see it.

When we do our Holiday Closure, I always take closer look at everything- including our folders and permission setting, so I will be doing that again at that time, and I will look, with this in another tab or window! :XD:

again: I wish... that this could get a DD. ;)

Can you imagine?  What would happen if it was suggested, would "they" be mad? :XD:

Thank you, KarRedRoses, for guiding me here, and of course Stygma for writing this clear tutorial!

Now, this is a long shot, but you seem to know about Groups: How do I sort the Group's folder in the drop-down menu? A while back, I simply renamed the folders and it was sorted alphanumerically, but now it's as if it takes the creation date of the folder into account (which would make sense). I just wonder if that was a change in dA or a change in my browser...

What do you mean with "each time"? Each time I make a new folder? Each time there's a new submission? Each time there's a system change? I can live with some of these options, not with each time there's a new submission, of course.

Thank you for compiling this document.  I have requested it for one of my groups so that others may understand the problems we admin were having and I can just refer members to it if there are any more messages.
Of course one of the many problems occurs in groups where one is Co Founder or even Contributor and the Founder does not visit DA any more, left no forwarding address, and didn't open the settings to give Co Founders a chance to rescue the group.  Chris on the help desk says if they don't leave DA then we can't kick em out!  So the groups stay, dotted all over DA and the requests and messages go unanswered!

Yeah! It's a big problem! Founder should be more considerate and transfer their group to someone else before leaving. Or DA should allow to switch to a new founder if this one was away for a long time.

I think the possibility of changing it defeats the original purpose.
But if it's possible, go for it! :D
I don't think you need to reset the settings though. It should still work without that step. :P

I don't understand it either. If you have 10 folders that means you can still request 100 deviations per day. As you say, that pretty much defeats the purpose of this whole change ^^; Aside from that, if they'd just warned us before this 'change' was implemented, and explained to us how to get everything right again, none of this drama would have been necessary. (Being a bit less rude towards Founders asking for help would probably also be a good idea)

I think after we wrote about this way (at public) they will block it too , for sad they not react on ours asking them to back previous functions.. but they do react on those ways/decides which we find and posting public and then they blocking them too. I hope this way will still alive long. Thank You Stygma from this journal and telling us about this way/decide which you found ! i will try later read it full later , i agreed with this way , i tried this way too when it just started cause i have more than 50 folders , i looked in settings and tried to add more folders in settings to which i can post artworks at first i tried to post myself photo but it again showed me ''limiting submissions in a group to 10 a day''... but now i see that this way working , i will read journal and try it too. But i think that it is more better when artworks coming in Featured folder cause artists coming to group that see in slideshow (only featured folder) so see between other Creative , Interesting and Colorful artworks also their artwork.. hmm i will think about it.

Also i wrote this journal where i described limitations which i found myself as admin of several groups seemypositiveart.deviantart.co…
